The battle between Harry Reid (D-NV) and his challenger Sharron Angle is interesting as a case study on the tea party movement.
Harry is business as usual. He controls and has given out tons of pork. For instance, pharmaceutical PACs and lobbyists have given Harry a lot of money for the special considerations they got in the so called “health reform” bill. The NRA got a $68 million shooting range in the Las Vegas area in return for (possibly-see PS below) their support.
The Republican Congressman from Nevada has supported Harry (!) but I think that it is the result of a rather cynical calculation It is my belief that Harry has made Dean Heller (R-NV) an offer he can’t refuse: If Heller supports Harry and if Harry wins re-election, the Dems will give him lots of pork for his district. On the other hand, if he doesn’t support Harry, the Dems will be sure that Dean will never get anything. If he supports Harry and Sharron wins, she will not have enough seniority or support to bring retribution to Dean for his betrayal. Easy calculation. Business as usual. Your interests get sold out unless you a beneficiary of the pork. However, Harry is using your children’s credit card to pay for his pork.
The Federal Elections Commission financial reports are in, through 30 June, 2010.
In the current election cycle, (since 1 January 2009 through 30 June 2010) Harry has raised some $13,776,171. As of 30 June, Harry had $8,940,302.
Sharron has raised a total of $1,254,216. She had $132,016 on hand as of 30 June.
Harry has almost 700% more money on hand than Sharron does.
So, the question that will be answered in this particular race: Will special interests buy the election for Harry? Or will you and I and Sharron prevail? I am doing what I can. How about you?

PS The NRA has not yet endorsed Harry Reid. Strategically thinking, they would be foolish to endorse either candidate at this time. It’s important for Harry to think that it is POSSIBLE. Otherwise, there could be swift and unpleasant retribution e.g. a Federal Firearms Registration Law passed like the health bill was. So, keep up the heat on the NRA. Hopefully, they will do the right thing after Congress goes home for the election.
