There is an incredible disconnect between the Educated Elite on the coasts and us Texans here in fly-over country. They believe that the government (run by them, naturally) should have all of the power and that others should depend on them and do as they tell us. “I AM the One We Have Been Waiting For” is a good example of their sense of entitlement for power.
That just doesn’t fly here in Texas. The majority here really do believe that the source of all power resides in the people and that the government is only allowed limited power to do the bidding of the people. The majority believes that God gives us our rights, not the government. The so-called “Bill of Rights” are prohibitions on the state to protect our God-given rights from the state.
The concept that our rights come from God is vastly different from attitudes in Europe. The European tradition is that the state is supreme. It is a misbegotten remnant of the concept of the divine right of the king. That tradition held that God gave all power to the King and it was required that the people follow his dictates. So called “rights” in Europe are little more than privileges allowed by the state.
The English Magna Carta is a list of privileges that the English king allowed others. (Of course, the barons were going to kill him if he didn’t sign.) And what the king gives, the king can take away. Various English kings tried to take those privileges away. During the ensuing troubles, the kings were killed. (There must be an object lesson here: Something about remembering the lessons of history, I believe.)
Texas is different. And one difference is the attitude towards the Second amendment: the right of THE PEOPLE to keep and bear arms. What part of “shall NOT be infringed” don’t they understand? I tell acquaintances from the coasts that Texas is so liberal that Blacks, Jews, and even Lesbians can own belt fed machine guns. THAT is power to the people. Contrast that to San Francisco where no minority can own a machine gun. Bigots.
Anyway, this was forwarded to me and Texans will get a chuckle out of it. Fools on either coast won’t have a clue.
For those of you who don’t live in Texas , and think we’re a bunch of uncivilized ruffians – Well, it’s simply not true!
In fact, we have ladies’ groups that meet regularly to discuss current events and develop needed home-skills.
For example, this photo was recently taken at a ladies group meeting in San Antonio.
