In 1997, Osama bin Laden gave an interview to CNN. During that interview, he gave four events that gave him the knowledge that they would be triumphant in the war that they had declared against the United States. To quote from the translation: “If the U.S. still thinks and brags that it still has this kind of power even after all these successive defeats in Vietnam, Beirut, Aden, and Somalia, then let them go back to those who are awaiting its return.”
For the entire interview, see here: http://www.anusha.com/osamaint.htm
The events he refers to are: 1. The Democrat’s failure in Vietnam (Walter Cronkite announced the war lost just before Johnson’s term was up. Nixon ran on the issue that he would end the Dem’s war, which he did.) 2. Beirut, Lebanon, where the US embassy was car bombed, diplomats were kidnapped and tortured to death, and the Marine barracks were car bombed. The Democrats threatened Reagan with impeachment if he retaliated. 3. Aden where Al Qaeda had car bombed a hotel being used as a transit hotel for troops going to Mogadishu. Clinton did nothing. 4. Somalia where our troops were ambushed as recounted in Black Hawk Down. Clinton cut and ran.
I would also add Jimmy Carter’s failure to deal with the hostage crisis in Iran. The Mad Mullahs took that pathetic fool by the scruff of the neck and rubbed his nose in the doggy poo.
An article from the 4/28 WSJ lists another event; actually two events on the same day. (If you haven’t already subscribed to the WSJ at least on-line, I would encourage you to. There is a reason why most other newspapers are loosing readers while the WSJ is gaining. ) http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704471204575210254017082986.html
By the way, for the poetry minded, here is a poem that will illustrate why the leaders of the Moslem countries have nothing but contempt for He Whose Middle Name Cannot Be Spoken (or you will be stoned as a racist).
With all of bowing and scraping and apologizing and waffling, I, The One We Have Been Waiting For, is seen as a weakling and a fool.
PS-one more thought. bin Laden’s interview was in 1997. Clinton was president and the war was already on. The war on terror is Clinton’s war.
